Pets are part of the family, but dogs and cats can sometimes cause significant damage to carpet. Scratching, digging, chewing, and other pet behavior can leave carpet torn, frayed, or completely pulled apart.
The good news is that pet-damaged carpet does not always require replacing the entire room. Depending on the carpet’s condition and the size of the damaged area, professional carpet repair may be an affordable alternative.
Before & After: A 4′ x 4′ Pet Damage Repair
The before-and-after photos in this article show a recent pet damage carpet repair in Peoria, AZ. A pet had torn up approximately a 4-foot by 4-foot section of carpet, leaving a large area that needed to be replaced.
Fortunately, the homeowner had the same carpet installed in a closet. We were able to carefully remove carpet from the closet and use it as donor carpet to replace the damaged 4′ x 4′ section.
Using carpet from another area of the home can be an excellent repair option because the donor carpet is the same original carpet. However, even matching carpet can have a slight difference in appearance because the exposed carpet has experienced years of sunlight, foot traffic, and wear.
What Happens to the Closet?
When carpet is taken from a closet for a repair, we don’t simply leave the closet without carpet.
In this case, we installed a non-matching carpet remnant in the closet. Because the closet is a less visible area, this allowed us to use the original matching carpet where it mattered most—on the main floor where the pet damage occurred.
This type of donor-carpet repair is one example of why it’s worth having a professional evaluate damaged carpet before assuming the entire room needs to be replaced.
Can Carpet Be Repaired After Pet Damage?
The answer depends on the type and extent of the damage. Some pet damage can be repaired by replacing a section of carpet, while other situations may require additional work.
